The Taste of South India !
Let me begin this portal by advertising a dish that everyone loves & has gained a firm foothold in every south-indian home. Ladies & Gentlemen, we call this the “IDLI“.. Beginning its career as a dish made basically of fermented black lentil dating back to 920 AD, (Courtesy : Wikipedia), it has now become an inevitable part of our lives. Be it daily breakfasts, marriage feasts, road-side eateries, prescribed diet for those under medication or little idli vendors scurrying through railway platforms, Idli has mesmerized people with its simple, yet streaming aroma & delicacy. No wonder multiple flavours of Idli have sprung up - Ragi Idli, Rava Idli, Kancheepuram Idli & so on.
Delivering my part of the experience with this savory cake, I still remember the famous Idli vendor who dwelt (I dont know if he banks there even now) in the incessantly busy Howrah Railway Station on the platform where all South-bound trains made their halt and claimed soaring business. He was a Tamil guy who made authentic soft Idlies and served them with an aromatic Sambar & variety of chutney’s that literally set you high ! I have never missed his idlies while all my travel through Howrah Railway Station.
Lets salute the Taste of “IDLI” & keep this space alive by bringing out places where you find delectable species of Idlies to savour !
